We mostly use herbal medicines for chronic presentations. They are dose dependant and the gentle supportive action aims to address the root cause of the condition and therefore produces more permanent results. However, the desired effect takes longer to achieve compared to pharmaceutical drugs.
Having said that, I have noticed that some herbs, and two in particular, seem to exert their benefit as quickly as within 24 hours. They are St John’s Wort and Vervain. Interestingly I use both to address cases presenting with flat mood or mild depression with consistently positive feedback.
Could it be that it is quicker for the actives in these herbs to hit serotonergic receptors and rebuild the ‘feel good’ hormonal pathways than it is for other herbs to do their job (ie detoxification, immune or adrenal support)? I would say so.
Of course every person is different and bodies heal at differing rates but this seems a consistent observation for me.
