Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna)
Used for thousands of years and hailed in India as a ‘protector’ herb, Arjuna bark is considered in India as one of the most sacred trees used traditionally to treat heart disease, angina, chronic fever and longevity (Morgan, 2018; Seth, Dua, & Maulik, 2013). Today, research has found that Arjuna has strong antioxidant properties and supports heart health by reducing oxidative stress and tissue injury due to its phytochemistry which includes triterpenes, tannins, glycosides, high amounts of flavonoids (quercetin and luteolin), minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc, and copper) and compounds such as histidine and lysine (Seth, Dua, & Maulik, 2013). Medicinally today Arjuna is considered a cardiotonic, cardioprotective, hypolipidemic and antioxidant and is indicated for ischaemic heart disease, support for the ageing heart, and adjunctive treatment for hyperlipidaemia and hypotension (Morgan, 2018). Warning in pregnancy, lactation and children. For more information, refer to the Mediherb website.
